December 26th, 2005 - Rome

When Pope John Paul II died in April 2005 he had been Pope for 27 years, the second-longest reigning Pope in history. All eyes were on Rome to see who would be installed as the Servant of the Servants of God. On the 19th of April 2005, Joseph Alois Ratzinger, Cardinal Bishop of Velletri-Segni, became Pope Benedict XVI.

High up the walls of the nave of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside The Walls in Rome, they have portraits of all the different Popes over the years... the many many years... I went to visit the Basilica in December 2005, it was dark and the portraits are quite far up the walls however my little 5.2MP Nikon Coolpix was just about able to cope and by standing very still I was able to get this shot...
